You do not need to know your diagnosis before scheduling a psychiatric appointment.
Mental health conditions can share many symptoms. Difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep, irritability, restlessness, excessive worry, low motivation, and emotional changes may occur with several different mental health conditions. Sometimes what appears to be one condition may actually be related to another concern, or several concerns may be occurring together.
A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation helps your provider understand what you have been experiencing, how long symptoms have been present, how they affect everyday life, and whether other medical or mental health factors may be contributing.
You don’t need to arrive knowing the correct psychiatric terminology or having researched every possible diagnosis. Start by describing what you’ve noticed.
“Something hasn’t felt right, and I’d like to understand why” is enough to begin the conversation.
