Psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners can both play important roles in evaluating and treating mental health conditions, but their education and professional backgrounds are different.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MD) or doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO) who completes medical school followed by specialized residency training in psychiatry. Psychiatrists can evaluate mental health conditions, diagnose psychiatric disorders, prescribe medications, and develop treatment plans.
A psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse with graduate-level education and specialized training in psychiatric and mental health care. Depending on applicable state laws and the provider’s credentials, psychiatric nurse practitioners can evaluate patients, diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medications, provide medication management, and deliver ongoing psychiatric care.
Both types of providers may therefore perform many of the psychiatric services a patient encounters during treatment. Their educational pathways are different, but choosing a provider should also involve factors such as the services you need, the provider’s experience, availability, treatment approach, and whether you feel comfortable communicating openly with them.
At Serenity Health Telepsychiatry, psychiatric care is provided by Heriberto Sierra, RN, MSN, PMHNP-BC, a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner providing virtual psychiatric evaluation and medication management services.
