Can medications be prescribed during a telehealth appointment?

Yes. When clinically appropriate, psychiatric medications may be prescribed through telehealth appointments in accordance with applicable federal and state prescribing requirements.

However, scheduling a psychiatric appointment does not automatically mean medication will be prescribed. Your provider first needs to understand your symptoms, medical and mental health history, current medications, previous treatment, and other factors that may affect treatment decisions.

If medication is appropriate, your provider can discuss why it is being recommended, potential benefits and risks, possible side effects, and what should be monitored after treatment begins. Follow-up medication management visits can then help determine whether the medication is providing meaningful benefit or whether treatment adjustments may be necessary.

Prescribing requirements may also differ depending on the medication and individual circumstances. Your psychiatric provider can explain any requirements that apply to your treatment.

The purpose of a telehealth psychiatric appointment is to determine appropriate care, not simply to obtain a prescription.
